• Excursions to famous placeslike Loreto, Ancona, Recanati, Castelfidardo, Urbino, the “Grotte di Frasassi” (an underground complex of limestone caves), etc.
Loreto is a charming town situated on a hill 127metres above sea level. It is famous worldwide for the “Santuario della Madonna” (Our Lady’s Sanctuary). In 1291, the Crusades were forced to abandon Palestine and Our Lady’s Holy House was transported by angels first to Tersatto, in Illyria, and then to the Recanati area. After being moved several times, the Holy House was finally placed on a hill will laurel trees (hence the name “lauretem”, that is Loreto) during the night between the 9th and 10th December 1294. The Sanctuary conserves Our Lady’s Holy House of Nazareth where the Virgin Mary was born, brought up and received the Annunciation. In memory of this miraculous flight from the Holy Land to Loreto, the Madonna of Loreto is the patron saint of the Italian Air Force.

Ancona is the provincial capital of the The Marches.
Its name comes from the way the bay is shaped like a bent elbow (from the Greek, ankon:elbow) and city life has always been closely linked to the port, which spreads out amphitheatre-style and is bordered by the prominences of Guasco, Astagno and Cardeto which are extensions of Mount Conero. The Cathedral of San Ciriaco, one of the most interesting medieval churches in the Marches region, dominates the vast port area. The remains of San Ciriaco, patron saint of the city, are conserved here. The “Arco di Traiano”, the “Lazzaretto”, the “Pinacoteca civica” (picture gallery), the museums (amongst which the “Omero” tactile museum, where art can be touched), “Santa Maria della Piazza” Church, monuments, squares and main shopping streets and bars and restaurants are all worth seeing.

Recanatiis set upon a hilltop, between the valleys of the River Potenza and the River Musone. From here there is a extraordinarily wide panorama. This city is the famous birthplace of the poet Giacomo Leopardi and the tenor Beniamino Gigli. Their homes are interesting places to see, as are the historic mansions , museums and libraries.

Le Grotte di Frasassiis a awesome complex of underground caves discovered, by chance, by a farmer on 28th June, 1948 when he entered the first cavern called the “Grotta del Vento”. Other magnificent caves were subsequently unearthed by the “Club Alpino Italiano” of Jesi and Fabriano. The complex of caves is currently more than 13 km long and contains spectacular lakes and natural sculptures formed by the action of water on the rock. Water trickles down the walls of the caves and whilst dripping to the ground deposits small quantities of limestone, thus forming rather large, strangely-shaped concretions, which can be divided into two categories: stalagmites (from the ground upwards) and stalactites (from the cave roof downwards)
Camerano, the birthplace of the painter Carlo Maratti, lies within the area of the Parco del Conero and is of Neolithic origin (approximately 5,000 years ago). Indeed, on the road leading from Camerano to Poggio, there is a hill with a flat top which, according to experts, is the remains of an old, fortified village. However, the fascinating feature of Camerano is the underground part: cupolas, hanging domes, rising barrel vaults, circular rooms and columns in a particular, architectonic style are characteristic of this fable-like, underground town. It seems that this subterranean complex was created by the locals in 1944 as protection from bombings. Festivities in commemoration of the patron saint on 29/8 and the “festa dell’uva”(wine festival) in September are a must.

Offagna in a panoramic and strategic position, is situated in the hilly, green countryside which is typical of the Marches. It is a wonderful, medieval hamlet with a centuries-old history. The castle dates back to 958 and was built on the large landed estate of the noble Afrani family to protect the settlement. Every year, for a week in July, the streets and squares of Offagna re-live the Medieval and Renaissance culture and the traditional, armed challenges of the period. A particular theme of the Middle Ages is chosen to characterise the whole event.
Castelfidardo is on a hill and its name comes from an old castle of which remain only the gates and a part of the city walls. A monument at the entrance to the city commemorates the historic battle, in 1860, between the papal troops and the troops of Piedmont which led to the annexation of Umbria and the Marches, first to the Kingdom of Sardinia and then to the Kingdom of Italy. In the 19th century, Paolo Soprani began to make accordions and the economy of Castelfidardo, which was mainly agricultural, became industrial. Here you can visit the world-famous Museum of the Accordion.

Urbino whose ancient origins shaped the history of the Renaissance, is situated between the basins of the River Foglia and River Metauro. It is here that the artistic genius of Raphael was formed and that artists like Bramanti, Laurana, Piero della Francesca were influenced. In 1998, Urbino became part of the UNESCO heritage and within the city walls, the atmosphere of centuries gone by is still perceptible in the many works to be seen such as the Palazzo Ducale, Raphael’s house, the Cathedral, churches, convents, the University, the Grotte del Duomo and several buildings ranging from noble palaces to the Roman bridge.
